Technical Trends in Natural Fragrances
Natural fragrance blends are becoming more commonplace in household and personal care products. As consumers increase their demands for natural blends, we are seeing a shift in the desired olfactive signatures. We are also seeing trends in how the consumer and the formulator are specifying the composition of their natural blends, particularly in light of the changing regulatory landscape.

Bio-Based Additives for Sustainable Fragrance Formulations
Consumers are increasingly seeking formulations that contain bio-based and environmentally friendly components and that can deliver high levels of sustainability through their manufacture and use. While fragrances are under growing scrutiny to meet such sustainability requirements, it is also important that complementary ingredients such as solubilizers and delivery aids also meet these same standards. To help meet these needs, Croda is developing high performance components for fragrance formulations that are safe, environmentally friendly, and support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The sustainability of these materials is documented by ecotox data, bio-based carbon content measurements, and calculated reductions in carbon footprint. We will present three product areas that demonstrate these sustainability features and discuss how they can be used to help develop sustainable fragrance formulations. These products include our ECO Range of 100% bio-based fragrance solubilizers, high bio-based gellants for the formulation of fragrance gels, and the Zinador range of high bio-based odor neutralizers.

A Step-Wise Safety Evaluation Process for Natural Complex Substances
The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, Inc. (RIFM) has evaluated the safety data for fragrance materials for over 53 years. A common misconception is that “natural” materials inherently means safe and simple, but determining the safety of natural complex substances (NCS) is an issue facing many industries. RIFM will apply the latest science and the extensive knowledge compiled over the years concerning the components of NCS to determine material safety. A series of decision trees, reflecting advances in the risk assessment approaches of mixtures, and classical toxicological methodologies will follow a similar 4-step process with testing only as a last resort: 1) evaluate the available data on the NCS; 2) apply the Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) if appropriate; 3) evaluate the NCS on a component basis; 4) generate data if needed. Using in silico tools, RIFM examined NCS similarities based on the plant part, processing methods, and composition of materials across 81 plant families to address data gaps. Data generated from the Creme RIFM Aggregate Exposure Model for over 900 fragrance NCS demonstrates very low human health exposure, primarily through dermal exposure. This process provides a comprehensive and robust safety assessment of NCS.
